The Best Skincare for Dry Or Sensitive Skin.

Building a skincare routine for sensitive skin can be hard, but Balmonds gentle natural products are specifically designed to keep reactive skin nourished and healthy.

How to look after skin that’s sensitive to environmental or topical irritants

70% of the population has sensitive skin, which means there’s an awful lot of us who find ourselves affected by a whole variety of triggers! Your skin may cope differently at different stages of its cycle or different times of year; it might react to cold air, to perfume or to preservatives in moisturisers. Whatever your individual triggers, the key to looking after sensitive skin is to keep things simple.

Balmonds: Redefining Natural Skincare

We’re committed to doing skincare differently. Our range is fragrance-free as standard, and we ensure our products are safe and effective for even the most sensitive skin, leaving out problematic ingredients which can trigger flare-ups.

We’ve gathered expert advice, top tips and a selection of simple, gentle, effective products to keep your sensitive skin in the best condition possible.

Looking After Dry & Sensitive Skin.

Caring for skin which tends towards dryness or is easily irritated involves working on a healthy and effective barrier function, so that vital moisture and oils are kept in - and irritants are kept out!

Sensitive skin usually has a compromised barrier, whether due to age, genetics, health conditions like diabetes, environmental factors like the weather, or something it’s come into contact with. A leaky or fragile barrier can let irritants pass through, causing damage and triggering itchiness and inflammation.

The good news is that it’s possible to support your skin barrier with the right skincare. A simple, oil-based moisturiser free from irritant ingredients can help protect against moisture-loss. Nutrient-rich ingredients can build longer term resilience, with EFA-rich oils such as hemp seed or olive working to support repair and regeneration, as well as balancing the production of the skin’s natural oils.

Can The Menopause Cause Sensitive Skin Issues?

For many women, hitting perimenopause means that even if they’ve had ‘normal’ skin so far, their forties and fifties bring new allergies and sensitivities; they might experience flare-ups of eczema for the first time, or notice that their skin is sore, dry, itchy and generally more delicate than it’s been previously.

So, this can be a time to take stock, change up your skincare routines, and give yourself and your skin a little extra care.

Here are some great tips for coping with perimenopausal skin:

  • Replenish essential fatty acids with EFA-rich oils, both on your skin and in your diet
  • Protect delicate skin in the wind, the cold and the sun, with thicker creams and balms
  • Hydrate yourself, both by drinking water and applying moisturiser regularly through the day
  • Nourish yourself with a good diet, rich in fibre, vitamins and Omega oils
  • Cool down! Bathe in water that’s lukewarm not hot; keep a fan to hand; use skincare enriched with calming aloe vera or cooling menthol
  • Change your routine: if your usual shampoo, face cream or soap is now causing irritation, try something gentler, free from SLS or harsh preservatives
  • Unwind: stress has an unexpectedly powerful effect on the skin, so take the opportunity now to try new self-care practices, whether that means taking up yoga, meditation, getting support from friends, or working on better sleep routines

And remember! This stage will pass. Once menopause has occurred, most of the most miserable symptoms - the itching, the inflammation - generally calm down.

Skin is not just a protective barrier, it’s directly linked to our nervous system, which is made up of our brain and spinal cord. Our skin connects the nervous, immune, cutaneous and endocrine functions.

If you have sensitive skin, stress will likely impact your skin more than other people, as it’s more impacted by the disrupted delicate balance of hormones. Once the cortisol is in your system, we can’t stop the itchy response - but you can learn to change your response to stress!
