While nothing can actually ‘kill’ psoriasis, many mild and moderate cases can be alleviated with natural treatments performed at home.
Apple cider vinegar is known to have results for some sufferers, by soothing pain and irritation. In this blog, we look at how to treat psoriasis with vinegar.
Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes inflamed and flushed patches of skin that can be covered with plaques. There is no known cure for psoriasis currently. Whilst there are treatments available, these focus on the long term management of the condition, rather than eradicating it. We always advocate a natural, holistic approach to skincare, and here we explore the benefits of an ingredient that can be found in the kitchen cupboard.
There are two ways in which apple cider vinegar is thought to alleviate the symptoms: internally, by being taken orally; and externally, through the use of topical treatments. This two-pronged approach tackles psoriasis from the inside out; a good way to handle a disease that originates deep in the body and manifests on the skin.
Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation in the body. Apple cider vinegar is said to have anti-inflammatory properties. Ingesting the vinegar may contribute to good gut health by rebalancing acidity and lowering inflammation. Take apple cider vinegar every day before meals, diluted with water, to improve digestion and boost the immune system.
Apple cider vinegar has antibacterial, antimicrobial and exfoliating qualities that can provide relief when applied topically. In particular, it is thought to help to alleviate psoriasis on the scalp and can be massaged, in a diluted form, several times per week. Apply in compress form to painful and dry patches of skin. Never put the vinegar directly onto skin without diluting it first, or you could risk burns.
The use of vinegar in the treatment of psoriasis is not suited to everyone and you should always consult your doctor before trying any new technique.
- Do buy a good quality, apple cider vinegar, preferably one that contains ‘The Mother’ for maximum health benefits.
- Do dilute with water, in a ratio of one to one, when applying topically.
- Do consume vinegar substantially watered down.
- Do make sure you rinse skin after applying the vinegar and water solution.
- Don’t apply vinegar neat to skin as it may lead to burning sensations.
- Don’t apply vinegar to cracked or bleeding skin, or open wounds.
- Don’t ingest vinegar undiluted.
