Rosehip is renowned as a traditional remedy for scars, but does it actually work?
The first thing to note is that rosehip oil has been used in skincare for centuries, and is a treatment dating back to ancient civilisations.
So, yes, we think it’s really good for scars. Of course, as with any skincare issue there’s an abundance of opinions and recommendations out there, ranging from traditional medicines to mass-produced over-the-counter products, and everything else in between!
Whether you prefer to go the conventional medical route or try home remedies, there are so many options it can be difficult to know which route to take. But it’s fair to say that everyone agrees the right nutrient-rich oil can help reduce the appearance of scars.
Is rosehip better than other oils for scars?
Yes, we believe so! There are a range of options - geranium, lavender, cedar wood or sea buckthorn, for example - but here at Balmonds we wholeheartedly recommend rosehip oil. We feel it's best way to go if you want to support the regeneration and repair of damaged skin, because of the extraordinary richness of its nutrients.
Rosehip is great for treating:
- Post-operative scars
- Wrinkles
- Acne scars
- Stretch marks
- And generally improving the condition of your skin anywhere on your body.
Rosehip oil also makes a perfect carrier oil for other essential oils to help treat specific skin conditions. So you can mix and match with other nourishing ingredients (as we do in our blended Rosehip Scar Oil).
How does rosehip oil work?
There’s been some sound medical research conducted concerning the effectiveness of rosehip oil as a treatment for scars.
A 2015 study, published in the Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications, presented research revealing that in the instances of post-surgical scars, when applying rosehip oil twice a day, every day, for a period of 12 weeks, the consistent results were considerably less discoloration, redness and atrophy than if rosehip had been not used.
It seems that rosehips are full of exactly the right kind of vitamins, nutrients and essential fatty acids that the skin needs to support its natural cycle of repair and regeneration.
Rosehip basically feeds the body with the building blocks of healthy skin, and applying it topically means those nutrients get just where they’re needed.
So if you’ve got scars, pigmentation, or skin damaged by itchy flare-ups, why not give rosehip oil a go!
