Balmonds’ Ultimate Guide To Tattoo Aftercare

Balmonds’ Ultimate Guide To Tattoo Aftercare

Balmonds’ Ultimate Guide To Tattoo Aftercare

Tattoos might only take a few hours to ink but they last a lifetime, so it’s important that you take good care of them! You want those beautiful colours to stay as sharp and vibrant as possible, for as long as possible.

Take these thirteen steps to ensure tattoos heal as well as possible:

  1. Listen to your artist! They’re the professionals, so follow their advice to the letter.
  2. Leave your wrap on as instructed, whether it’s for a couple of hours or a whole day.
  3. Wash the area thoroughly, but very carefully, after taking off the wrap. Use a soap-free, unfragranced bodywash/cleanser (like our Natural Shampoo & Body Wash) and lukewarm water to do this.
  4. Pat dry - don’t rub! - with a clean paper (not cotton) towel.
  5. Apply a very fine layer of balm to the clean, dry skin.
  6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 morning and night until the tattoo is fully healed, and there’s no more scabbing or peeling. This usually takes two to four weeks.
  7. Don’t pick at the scabs! Resist the urge to scratch; you're risking loss of ink, scarring and infection...
  8. Cover tattoos with light, loose clothing for protection: don't be tempted to get them out and show them off just yet!
  9. Avoid contact with your pets. You're going into extreme infection prevention measures, and sadly cats and dogs are a major risk.
  10. Avoid contact with irritants - whether household cleaners, perfumed toiletries or pollen, anything that can cause inflammation and make you itch is worth steering well clear of while you're healing.
  11. Don’t expose the tattoo to the sun. This also means not covering it with sunscreen: just keep tattooed skin under clothes until fully healed.
  12. Don’t expose the tattoo to water. Avoid long baths and don't go swimming - in lakes, rivers, the sea or swimming pools - until your tattoo is healed.
  13. Look after your skin! Even after the healing period, always keep your skin well-moisturised and in good healthy condition with good quality unscented skincare.
